This is even more troublesome if you are a home owner than if you are renting from someone who is responsible financially for things that break down. If you are a renter it is usually as easy as calling your landlord and asking him to come out or send someone to look at your unit. On the other hand if you are a homeowner, unless you have some sort of a maintenance plan, you will need to trouble shoot the issue.
Before looking at anything else, check your actual thermostat. Sometimes when the batteries get low the thermostat will stop functioning properly and then you will need to replace the batteries. Other times the thermostat itself will go bad and the result will be the same. If the thermostat cannot read the temperature it is not going to prompt you’re A/C unit to kick on. If the thermostat appears to be working and you have put new batteries in the next thing you will want to do is have someone come out and check the Freon levels in your unit. It may just need a quick charge. Look to see if the fan is blowing on the outside of the unit. If you see that the fan is not running you may have an even bigger problem such as your air conditioner compressor being bad and needing to be replaced or repaired. In some cases when this happens it is even cheaper to just go and buy a whole new unit. It really depends on what the issue is.
